EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The University of Findlay received an $8,900 Campus Community grant from the Ohio Department of Higher Education to form an interfaith student organization that will promote outreach on campus and in the community — the funds will support student leadership development and intercultural programs in spring and summer. University of Findlay
- ➤ Findlay City Schools will hold a town hall on district finances at Donnell Middle School on April 9th so residents can get answers from the Superintendent, Treasurer, and Board members. The meeting follows a February event after a failed levy led to a $6.1 million budget cut and comes ahead of potential further cuts if a May 6 tax levy does not pass (residents can submit questions in advance). - ➤ Mayor Christina Muryn declared that March 21 will be World Down Syndrome Day in Findlay and urged residents to rock their socks by wearing mismatched socks to embrace each person’s unique beauty—she expects the day to promote acceptance. WFIN
- ➤ Findlay City Council approved an ordinance that adds a Cannabis Overlay District to the zoning code to allow retail sales of recreational and medical cannabis and will let up to two dispensaries open in four areas—Tiffin Avenue, I—75 exit 161/CR 99, Trenton Avenue, and West Main Cross Street. The ordinance lifts a 12—month moratorium on dispensaries after Ohio voters approved recreational marijuana in November 2023. WFIN
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ An annual report from the Ohio Department of Health shows that only 85.4 percent of kindergarteners are vaccinated amid an outbreak in Texas and New Mexico while the national rate is 92.7 percent. Doctors urge parents to schedule the MMR vaccine for their children if they have not yet been vaccinated. WFIN
