- ➤ Over 850 volunteers from area corporations and small businesses will help 32 local organizations complete 85 projects during the Days of Caring event from May 5-9—volunteer teams will work four-hour shifts to provide 3,444 service hours valued at nearly $120,000 in support of landscaping, building, and construction projects across Hancock County. - ➤ Preparations are underway at Community Gardens of Hancock County in Findlay as volunteer teams from Marathon Petroleum Corporation will work through United Way of Hancock County’s Days of Caring to mark and mulch garden walkways ahead of the May 9 opening. A meeting at the Family Center (1800 N. Blanchard St.) was held on April 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. to assist with garden applications and share project plans. WFIN
- ➤ United Way's free tax preparation service processed and submitted 1,206 local taxes this season using about 20 volunteers who contributed 1,860 hours of work—50 North and the Findlay-Hancock County Public Library hosted the 10-week VITA program that supported community members in filing their taxes. The partnership helped provide valuable assistance during the tax season. WFIN

- ➤ A vehicle crashed into the Pilot Travel Center on State Route 613—at the Van Buren exit—at approximately 12:25 p.m. on Thursday when 36-year-old Brandon Stengle from Toledo lost control after exiting southbound Interstate 75; he was taken to Blanchard Valley Hospital and the store sustained major damage as it was closed for renovations. - ➤ Defiance native Capt. David L. Reyes took over command of Military Sealift Command Far East at the Singapore Naval Installation on April 30—replacing Capt. Robert R. Williams who will retire after 33 years of service. Rear Adm. Todd F. Cimicata presented Williams with a Legion of Merit medal during the ceremony, marking a key leadership change for MSC Far East.
