COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation announced the June Fun For All schedule, which will offer affordable family-friendly activities in Hancock County and reveal pool dates soon. The series, which began in January 2023, works with local partners + aims to make summer events accessible for residents.  WFIN

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Ohio fields moved faster last week as corn planting jumped 20 percentage points to 54% with emergence at 36, while soybean planting reached 52% and emergence 33; oats planting neared completion and winter wheat advanced with 98% jointed and 75% headed — crop conditions improved with surplus topsoil dropping from 50% to 41%.  WFIN
  • Ohio farmers expressed disappointment after Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. issued the MAHA report on May 22 that questioned the safety of pesticides like atrazine — glyphosate, tools they say are vital for modern farming. Grower leaders argued the report dismisses decades of solid scientific research and warned it could affect future farming practices.  WFIN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Ohio Department of Transportation today announced the winners of its annual Paint-the-Plow program, with Carey High School (Wyandot County) earning first place in the People’s Choice Award for its entry 'Paws and Follow the Laws' featuring K9 Nigel. Fort Jennings High School (Putnam County) received second in the People’s Choice and first in the ODOT Choice Award among 23 schools from eight counties.  WFIN
  • The Findlay Kiwanis Club announced the 2025 scholarship recipients who each received $2,500, including Kate Simmons, Daniel Jung, Lillian Grady, Brenna Frankart, Catalina Jimenez and Brandon Zuercher, with the awards funded through Pancake Day, Purse Bingo and member donations. The club said eligible high school and college students should apply for the 2026 awards online starting in January — a chance to build on a legacy honoring long-time club member Fred Brucklacher — as the program supports local education.  WFIN
  • The Findlay-Hancock County Public Library announced the 2025 SummerREAD Program theme, Color Our World, inviting readers of all ages to join a summer focused on art and creativity. The library will hold a kickoff party on June 2 (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and an event at the Arlington Branch on June 7 (11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.) with free registration and prizes for participants.  WFIN
  • The University of Findlay’s Mazza Museum will host a hands-on summer STEAM camp themed 'Behind the Byte' from June 9 to 13 for students aged 8 to 14 to learn about computer parts and block coding. The camp runs on campus from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and registration costs $200—covering all materials and a camp T-shirt.  WFIN
