COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Black Heritage Library and Multicultural Center in Findlay will host its 5th Annual Juneteenth Freedom Day Celebration at 817 Harmon Street from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 21 — the event will feature live musical performances, food, guest speakers, comic and spoken word performers and children's activities as part of the Findlay Hancock County Community Foundation’s Fun for All series.  WFIN

ECONOMY NEWS

  • According to USDA's Crop Progress report, Ohio farmers made small progress last week with corn emerging 86% and almost all soybeans planted at 92%—even though some crop conditions did not meet five-year averages. Winter wheat is 99% headed as farmers plan further work before harvest begins.  WFIN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Findlay District is hosting open houses for community members and media; the Findlay Post holds its event today from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., while other posts in Bowling Green, Defiance, Swanton, Van Wert, Lima and Toledo offer tours and recruiter sessions on scheduled dates. The Patrol is also accepting applications for cadet class 178 starting this September, with further assistance available on site (applications close on July 15).  Hometown Stations
  • Attorney General Dave Yost announced that attorneys general from 49 states, the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories signed on to a $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family that ends their control of Purdue and bars them from selling opioids. Ohio will receive up to $198 million from the settlement, which will be distributed over 15 years under the OneOhio plan (a bankruptcy court hearing is scheduled soon).  Hometown Stations
  • The City of Findlay announced road construction from June 16 to June 20 that will reduce lanes and close multiple streets—Broad Ave, W. Melrose Ave, East St, Carnahan Ave, Scott Ct, Allen Ave, Midland Ave, Garfield Ave, George St, Baseline Rd, Morrical Blvd, Howard St and N. Blanchard St—for resurfacing, curb replacement, sanitary sewer work, waterline installation and trail construction.  WFIN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ohio State University Extension is offering free webinars, pressure canner testing and science-based resources to help Ohioans preserve food safely this season. Kate Shumaker and her team warn that improper canning can grow harmful germs—such as the botulism toxin—that can make people very sick.  WFIN
  • The ICU nursing team at Blanchard Valley Hospital was honored with the May DAISY Award for their kind care during a patient's final moments (the patient was a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother). A family nominated the team after they helped create a comforting setting with pillows, blankets, and kind acts.  WFIN

  • Metzger/Brecheisen Company moved into its new offices in a renovated historic building at 331 North Main Street that houses ten loft apartments on the upper floors and held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the move, with the apartments now listed at 333 North Main Street (built in 1889).  WFIN
